My husband had to travel out of town for work so on top of juggling three children I had to: bring one to Tball (opening day and practice,) arrange for my daughter to attend communion practice, volunteer at school, head to a dermatologist appointment (where they found a second potential skin cancer,) attend a family morning share at school, bring one child to the doctor, pick one up from school early on two different days, oh and clean, shop, cook and plan a communion party for my daughter which also happened to fall on my 42nd birthday. To top it all off, for some strange reason one of the children woke every day at 5:30am and my daughter fell off the monkey bars on Friday evening and has a buckle fracture on her wrist. She just got a cast on this morning. I am still exhausted and trying to catch up, but who has time really. This week it's teacher appreciation and I've helped plan a little something special each day for both of the teachers of my school aged children. After hosting parties for the past four weeks straight, the communion party on Saturday felt like a triumph and the end of a good race.
Crossroads:

Next month it will be five years since I started blogging! I am starting to feel like I have come to a crossroads and am considering moving in a different direction. Perhaps I may create a website and focus more on starting a business. I'm not really sure. I just feel like it's time for a change. My children are growing up so fast. In a blink of an eye they'll be off to college and I want to be present and in the moment. Of course I will still celebrate every single holiday and special occasion, maybe I just won't need to take 100 pictures after for the blog. I will certainly let you know when or if I make any major decisions so that if you are interested you can follow along on my journey. Thanks for taking the time to stop by my blog. For your kind emails. For your comments and interest in my projects. I've certainly enjoyed having a space to share all of my ideas. nina healyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462229242229088935noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674810650856323149.post-38784091366467930112014-04-28T11:47:00.000-04:002014-04-28T11:47:16.734-04:00a pearl partyWe had another crazy weekend. On Friday evening we went to a wonderful performance of "The Wizard of Oz, on Saturday we celebrated my mom's 80th birthday and on Sunday my son had Opening Day for Tball! I wish I could say that things were going to slow down, but this weekend is my birthday and my daughters first communion, on the same day! I can't complain for even one second, because we have been celebrating such fun and special people and occasions.
My dad (who will be 90 in July) organized a very small, low key birthday for my mom at their lake house. I am talking fried chicken on paper plates, which was just what my mom wanted, but I couldn't let the day get away from me without adding a few personal details. I brought a salad and some desserts (coconut cupcakes and tiny almond sugar cookies in the shape of "80's.") I also made some favors, which were shimmery white chocolates that resembled pearls. I put them in some pretty ring boxes and tied them with ribbon. For her gift, we organized some "pearls of wisdom" or advice she had given to friends and family. My mother, the most modest woman on the face of the earth was a little embarrassed by the gesture, but I can't tell you how much we have all enjoyed reading them. Maybe this was more a gift for me than for her. We also got her a Mikimoto Pearl bracelet! You only turn 80 once, right? It was a lovely day spent with her immediate family, just as she wanted. Hope you all had a lovely weekend too!

From snowflakes, to bunnies to BIRTHDAY'S!!! My lovely mom is celebrating her 80th on Saturday. We are getting her some fancy pearls because she loves jewelry and to go with them I asked friends and family to share some of mom's "pearls of wisdom" with us. I printed them on some fancy paper and placed them in a beautiful mother of pearl jewelry box! I attached the quote "Real friendship, like real poetry, is extremely rare- and precious as a pearl!" She has requested a small family picnic at their lake house for her special day, but we are hoping to surprise with a few special gifts and memories as well.
The children were off from school the entire week leading up to Easter which made it a little challenging trying to get everything ready, but we managed to get it all done. On Friday, the children colored eggs and had a fun Easter themed lunch. On Saturday, they participated in two egg hunts, one in town and one at my parents lake house. Then we hosted my parents and brother and his family for a delicious lamb dinner and the cousins all watched "Hop" before heading to bed. On Easter Sunday the kids found their baskets and we had a leisurely breakfast. Hope you all have a lovely weekend too.
For the 8 year old girl, I filled her basket with a book, a notebook, some stickers, crayons and gumballs among other things. And for the mom I went with a navy/anchor theme and included a bottle of wine called "Jelly Bean" that I thought was fitting for the occasion. These were really fun to put together and I am already looking forward to our morning together.
She is a mini lop ear bunny, named Mrs. Cottontail. We are all completely smitten with her, in fact I often find myself snuggling with her long after the children are in bed. She is so quiet and very low maintenance, which is the perfect pet for us. I am having a blast thinking of new places to photograph her. Below is one in my daughters Easter basket and the other with a ceramic carrot. We are thrilled to have our very own Easter bunny this year!
She started the day with her traditional m&m pancake, breakfast in bed. That was followed by opening her eight gifts and taking a few pictures before she headed off to school. I dropped off a special lunch for her at school and she ended the day with a pizza, pajama, and movie party with friends!
My daughter decided early on that she wanted a "Frozen" party. So we made some snowflake and glitter invitations and put them in clear envelopes. I think it set the perfect tone for her party. As I mentioned in my last post, we asked that in lieu of gifts her friends bring donations for the pajama project.

It was a wonderful day, filled with great memories. I'm going to spend the rest of the day taking down the snow and putting up the bunnies and start to get ready for Easter this weekend!nina healyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462229242229088935noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674810650856323149.post-75087231109738801822014-04-10T15:45:00.001-04:002014-04-10T15:45:37.293-04:00that's a wrapTomorrow is my daughter's eighth birthday!!! She wanted a "Frozen" themed party, so instead of my house being decorated with bunnies and chicks for Easter, it's decorated with snowflakes and white feather trees!
My daughter really wants a pet bunny for her birthday which we are hopefully picking out this weekend. So, for her big day tomorrow, I thought it would be fun for her to open 8 small gifts. I put them all in white boxes and wrapped them differently, but in the same color scheme and I love how they came out! She has ordered m&m pancakes for breakfast, a tradition on her birthday. Tomorrow evening a small group of friends are coming over to view the movie and eat some pizza in their pajamas. We asked her friends not to bring gifts, but instead to bring a donation of pajamas or books for the Pajama Program.
I picked up all of these fun wrapping papers on a recent trip to Michael's! They are small rolls which I actually find easier to wrap presents with and they only cost $1.50. I used them to wrap gifts for some upcoming parties. I used ribbon for the top gift, but thought some washi tape would be fun for the bottom one. I love the versatility of the paper with different color and pattern combinations.
I didn't tell them that today was April Fool's day so they wouldn't be expecting any tricks. My first trick was to serve them yogurt and apricot eggs! I made real eggs for my husbands breakfast so that it would smell like I had made eggs for them. My 5 year old son was totally fooled. he looked at me and said "you know I don't like eggs." He wouldn't go near it. So funny!
I packed them a tiny lunch for school and told them I hoped that they were really hungry! Of course, I packed their real lunches in their lunchboxes and tucked them inside their backpacks.
I haven't made a beach bucket themed gift in quite a while. It's been a very long winter! So, when one of my friends had a little baby boy, I knew I wanted to make one for her. I found a navy beach bucket and used vinyl letters that I bought at Staples for the babies monogram. I tucked in an adorable monogramed beach towel some tiny sunglasses, flip flops and a hat. This was a fun gift to put together for a family that loves to spend time on the beach at the Cape. nina healyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462229242229088935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674810650856323149.post-23112463190977161462014-03-20T13:12:00.003-04:002014-03-20T13:12:58.167-04:00spring

Today is the first day of Spring! I snapped this picture yesterday of a tulip on my mantle. I recently read that tulips can grow longer, even after they have been cut, because they reach for the sun. This tulip was completely reaching out over the mantle towards the sun. Just beautiful. I just love winter, but I am looking forward to pretty flowers and warmer days. When I was teaching one of the parents always made rice krispie treat nests filled with Cadbury mini eggs on the first day of Spring. I thought it was a sweet tradition and it was one that her kids always looked forward to. Do you have any fun first day of spring celebrations? I would love to hear about them.
I'm just now getting the house back in order! On Saturday we had an Irish cocktail party. I made Irish Stew, Pulled Pork with Guinness, Smoked Salmon on Brown bread and mini shepherds pie. I also made Bailey's rice pudding, Baileys sugar cookies, Guinness Pretzel truffles, Lucky Charm treats, and Car Bomb Cupcakes! If you would like the recipes for any of these please feel free to email me and I will send them along. I found most of them from my St. Patrick's Day Pinterest board. I decorated simply with lots of white flowers and gold candles and for favors we gave each couple an individual serving of Lucky Charms with two green spoons attached. My husband also had an Irish Whiskey tasting in the basement.
I love all holidays and St. Patrick's Day is no exception, and it bothers me that the only decorations I can ever find are ugly, plastic, and frankly rather untasteful. So, over the years I have taken it upon myself to make my own. I thought I would share some things that I have made this year, and some fun things that I have found. I saw a project that involved making gold polka dots on champagne glasses. I loved them and thought they would be perfect for our cocktail party, but when I started making them I didn't love how they were turning out. So, instead I made my own stencil, using a Martha Stewart shamrock punch and some gold paint specifically made for glass. I picked up the glasses at the dollar store and got started, I love how they turned out. Before our cocktail party I am going to rim each glass with some gold sprinkles.
For the door, I found this idea and was inspired. Again, I found the wreath frame at the dollar store. After I cut off all of the green, shining plastic I was left with a metal Shamrock frame. I glued some cardboard to the frame and then placed moss on top. I love how it turned out.
Since we don't generally have sugary cereal in the house, for a treat on St. Patrick's Day the children get Lucky Charms. I was so excited when I saw these limited addition Lucky Charms on Amazon. Recently, my daughter was invited to a birthday party for a dear friend, who also happens to be one of four children in her family. When I asked her mom about a gift, she suggested a special day out for the girls. I thought this was brilliant, a gift of making memories. After brainstorming with my daughter she decided she wanted a "girls day out" with her friend, that included getting their nails painted and having lunch at a restaurant. So, on her friends birthday, we gave her a little menu where she was able to make some choices: like whether she wanted her nails OR toes painted, what she would like to have for lunch, her favorite kind of chocolate truffle, etc. I put the menu in a little envelope and taped on a tiny pencil for her to use. I also included a tiny bottle of nail polish and a mini chocolate truffle lip-gloss. I attached a mini whisk to the outside and wrote "whisking you a very happy birthday!" We went with a cooking theme since that was the theme for her friends birthday party the following weekend.
Our day out was a lot of fun! After nails the girls got to choose one chocolate truffle at Godiva. Then they rode the escalator and sampled perfumes at Nordstrom's and finally had bagels for lunch. I took lots of photos throughout our special day and put them into an album which we gave her friend at her birthday party. It was a fun gift and now my daughter is thinking that she would like something similar for her own birthday in April.
Both of my school aged children are doing fun activities in school today. They have special people that work in town coming to read to them among other things. I saw this idea on Pinterest and knew I had to make it for their classes. It was SO easy, just took a little time to cut out the mustaches! I didn't have any felt so I just used sheets of foam.

Then, yesterday afternoon, I thought it might be fun to make a Dr. Seuss themed lunch for the children as well. I printed out tiny pictures of book covers and attached them to an appropriate snack. So "One Fish, Two Fish" was attached to some goldfish crackers, and I made a jello cup into a hat for the "Cat in the Hat." I made some A, B, C sandwiches for his book "A, B, C" and I even made a thing 1 and thing 2 water bottles. I had some small notebooks that look like tiny Dr. Seuss books which I wrapped and attached the book "Happy Birthday, To You." I hope the children will be excited when they open their lunchboxes today! It was fun to make and may become a tradition!

Yesterday my son lost his first tooth! So exciting. Of course, because of how I like to operate, I already had a stash of items ready for him. He picked out the pirate tooth holder as soon as his first tooth started to wiggle, which was way back in the fall! I had grabbed three tiny bottle of glitter when I saw them in Michaels so that when each child lost their first tooth they would get a small jar of "fairy dust." With the first tooth I always like to give a little gift so my son got some pirate crayons and for the monetary contribution the children always receive a gold dollar! You can get these right at the bank. I actually went ahead and got a roll of them so that I would be prepared, for a little while anyway. I used the same website to generate a name for my son's tooth fairy that I did for my daughter. As luck would have it my daughter also lost a tooth yesterday! Her tooth fairy left her a gold coin too.
Then, last night after we had tucked the children into bed, we heard lots of tiny feet running around. I went to investigate and found two notes and cups of water by their bedroom doors. The notes read: "dip your wings." When I asked the children what it meant they told me that someone had told them that if you left a little bowl of water out the fairies would dip their wings and you would be able to tell by the color of the water if their fairy was a girl or a boy. I thought it was hysterical. So off they went to sleep and I realized I had run out of red (for pink water) food coloring! So I had to use a sprinkle of strawberry jello mix! When my daughter woke up and smelled the water she said "it smells like strawberry! My fairy is a strawberry fairy!" Hahaha. I love kids. Do you have any fun tooth fairy traditions? I would love to hear about it. nina healyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462229242229088935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674810650856323149.post-91361286583915203212014-02-26T15:17:00.000-05:002014-02-26T15:17:13.708-05:00that's a wrap

I am thinking I may have posted something similar to this before, but my favorite gift for a winter baby is a copy of "The Hat" and a new winter hat. I put this one in a berry basket filled with natural straw and used a similar color rope/ribbon. A little gift to tell the new baby that we are excited for their winter arrival!
After lunch we took the kids on their Valentine adventure. This year we decided to take them to check out the Pez factory in Orange Ct. The kids loved it! They had fun watching the candy being made and were thrilled to pick out a new pez dispenser from the hundreds displayed in the store.
That evening we got a babysitter and headed out to the wine bar at The Gris with some friends. We had a lovely evening sipping wine and nibbling on tapas. Essex is my favorite town in Ct. and it didn't disappoint with a gorgeous snow fall and a romantic evening with my husband. We had a lovely Valentines day from beginning to end.
We always exchange Valentines with some friends who recently moved away. A little love to let them know we miss them. This year I went with a mustache theme. The card on the lid reads: "I mustache you a question, will you me my valentine?" I found mustache pajamas, ice cube molds, cupcake toppers, straws, even a lip-gloss! It was fun searching for all of these items and sending them off to our dear friends.
My children went back to school today. We had a busy and fun long weekend filled with sleepovers, three birthday parties, play dates, dentist appointments, a dinner date with my husband and a valentine adventure with the kids. I must admit that after 6 full days with everyone home I am relishing a quiet house while my little one naps. I will share pictures from our Valentines Day later in the week. It's raining and I am about to curl up with a cup of tea and a book.
For the children's snack I sent in an empty chocolate box (actually it was a tin) and filled it with different snacks/treats. I got this idea from an Instagram photo taken by Katherine Marie. I also saw another idea on pinterest where someone served different kinds of cheese in an empty candy box. I guess you could really fill it with anything you please. It was funny trying to peek in all of the candy boxes at the stores to find one that had the plastic liner in it. I ended up with some tin ones made by Mrs. Fields. I covered the label with a chalkboard heart sticker. I filled the inside with some red goldfish, raisins, chocolate cheerios, chocolate graham crackers and a few treats. The kids loved it!!!
My daughter's class isn't actually going to celebrate Valentine's Day until after our vacation, but since I had to go in for my son's class party I decided to bring something for my daughter's class too. Since it was sort of last minute and I already had a very busy morning, I grabbed some mini cupcakes from the grocery store and then made some tiny fortune cookies out of air heads to put on top. My daughter's class is studying Asia so I thought it would be cute. I also found this idea through pinterest, but instead of making large fortune cookies, I used a small round cookie cutter to make tiny ones. They came out so cute! And only took a few seconds to make each one. My daughter's class was thrilled with the surprise treat at the end of the day!
The kids don't have school on Friday because it is a professional development day for the teachers and Thursday it looks like we are getting a major snowstorm here in Connecticut, so the kids school Valentine parties might be cancelled. Regardless, the children picked out the Valentines they wanted to share with their friends and I thought I would share them with you. My daughter LOVES ice cream so when I saw these cards, I knew they would be perfect. We also found some valentine bubbles to attach to the outside of the card. My daughter used some washi tape to attach the bubbles to the card and I think they came out darling.
This morning my children surprised me with an early valentine, they brought me breakfast (cheerios & oj) in bed! They also made a sweet valentine card that said: "Happy Valentine's Day! You always make us happy!" What I love most is that they did this all by themselves, without any prompting or help. Best gift a mom could ever ask for. nina healyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02462229242229088935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-674810650856323149.post-42066246156236659702014-02-07T08:59:00.004-05:002014-02-07T08:59:54.791-05:00 love notes

I saw this idea on a blog a few years ago and decided this year we would give it a try. The idea is to write your kids love notes every day leading up to Valentine's Day. We started on Feb. 1, but you could start any day leading up to Valentine's Day. I already had these heart shaped notebooks so I put my children's initials on the covers and every night my husband and I take turns writing something we love about each child on a page inside. The children look forward to reading their message each morning and we have fun thinking about all the different ways we love them.
I hung a wreath that I had grabbed at target last year on the door and then thought it would be fun to hang hearts in all of the windows. To the right of the house is a white picket fence where I hung the "Be Mine" sign. I can't leave it out all of the time because it is made of metal and will rust, but you better believe it will be hanging out there next Friday!!! These small gestures make me so happy. I smile every time I pull up the driveway. Some people may think I'm crazy, but I would just tell them I'm crazy for love.
When I ran into the package store to grab her a bottle of wine, I found wine in a box shaped like a purse! It made me laugh and I grabbed it for the birthday girl. I used the colors from the wine box (red, black and gold) as the inspiration for wrapping the rest of her gifts and also added some plaid ribbon. I arranged some flowers in a vase, bought a mini dessert for her to enjoy, and popped a gift into a glittered gift bag. I love how it all came together in the end and I hope that she had a fabulous birthday.
