happy birthday, dr. seuss

This Sunday will be the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Both of my school aged children are doing fun activities in school today. They have special people that work in town coming to read to them among other things. I saw this idea on Pinterest and knew I had to make it for their classes. It was SO easy, just took a little time to cut out the mustaches! I didn't have any felt so I just used sheets of foam.

Then, yesterday afternoon, I thought it might be fun to make a Dr. Seuss themed lunch for the children as well. I printed out tiny pictures of book covers and attached them to an appropriate snack. So "One Fish, Two Fish" was attached to some goldfish crackers, and I made a jello cup into a hat for the "Cat in the Hat." I made some A, B, C sandwiches for his book "A, B, C" and I even made a thing 1 and thing 2 water bottles. I had some small notebooks that look like tiny Dr. Seuss books which I wrapped and attached the book "Happy Birthday, To You." I hope the children will be excited when they open their lunchboxes today! It was fun to make and may become a tradition!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

the lorax

Tonight we are having "dad's night" at my son's preschool.  Traditionally this has been a teacher run event, but for various reasons this year it has been taken over by the board/parents.  We choose The Lorax as our theme.  As I have been planning for this evening I was thinking that it would also make a great theme for a birthday party!  There are lots of ideas all over the web and Pinterest and I even have a board full of Dr. Seuss ideas that you can check out here.  For tonight, the children will be making Lorax pots and planting grass seed in them.  They will sort recyclables into their appropriate bins, take pictures with some  Lorax themed photo props and will munch on Truffula tree cupcakes, humming fish, and bar ba loots!   My son is SO excited for tonight and I couldn't be happier to help plan this event for him.

truffula trees

Last week was the last day that my the student teacher in my daughter's first grade class would be there.  Her teacher had the idea to make truffula trees so when I saw this idea on Pinterest, I knew they would be perfect.  They were quite easy to make and luckily I had all of the ingredients at home.  I think they came out pretty cute!  I saw some other pins where people used pretzel sticks for the tree trunk, mine used straws.  If you want to make them all edible, I also thought it might be cute to use Pirouline cookies.  These would be great for a Dr. Seus or Lorax party or even as a special treat for Arbor day.

the lorax

We went to a wedding in New Jersey this weekend!  Some friends (with two girls of their own) offered to watch our older two so that we could attend.  I wanted to give them a little thank you combined with an activity for the kids.  My inspiration was the Lorax movie.  I tucked the movie and some snack cups into a white popcorn bucket and made some lorax straws with bright yellow mustaches on them.  I included some Lorax themed snacks too:  humming fish (goldfish crackers) bar ba loots (teddy grahams) and white truffula seeds (mini marshmallows).  For the grown ups I dressed up a bottle of wine for them to enjoy after the kids were all in bed and I attached a gift certificate to the local movie theatre so that their whole family could enjoy a movie on us.  I also packed a small jar of Hershey kisses with a label that said "Magic mommy kisses.  Take two and I'll see you in the morning."  I left them with our friends but didn't tell the children about them.  They were just there just in case and luckily they weren't needed.
I can probably count on one hand the number of times that we have spent a night away from our children.  As always I was a little apprehensive, but it was funny because the kids were so excited about watching the movie and eating the snacks that they couldn't wait for us to leave!  Here is another idea that I used when we were gone for a whole weekend.
